First PEFC scheme in Africa

28.04.2009

The Gabonese Forest Certification Scheme (PAFC Gabon) is the first African scheme to meet PEFC's sustainability benchmark requirements. This is an important step for securing sustainable forest management in Africa.

Timber-based products originating from PAFC Gabon certified forests are now permitted to use the PEFC label, thereby gaining access to all global markets requiring PEFC certification as proof for sustainability of forest management practices.

As in all PEFC certification schemes Gabon has developed a national standard fulfilling all the international requirements for securing sustainable forest management. The importance of such a local standard is far higher than only certifying single properties. The Gabon standard may considerable contribute to further securing and developing sustainable forest management in Africa.
